What's the Point?

Most of us like to do good things for others. We want to make a positive contribution in some way. Maybe it’s a donation to a worthy cause, a random act of kindness, a good deed or some form of service. But in a world of great need, our actions can seem a bit pointless – just a drop in the ocean. What’s the point of doing good?

One day, in an unnamed synagogue, Jesus healed a woman who had been crippled for 18 years (Gospel of Luke, chapter 13). It changed her life. But the religious leaders were unimpressed, to say the least. So, what did the healing matter in the bigger scheme of things?

Jesus followed the miracle with a parable about planting a little seed and seeing a tree grow from it.  He said God’s Kingdom – God’s will for the world – is like that. One day there will be perfect joy, peace and love. Every act we do today that reflects that future is like planting a seed.
